Lungs Europe reached out to us for an EU-funded documentary called SOLACE, which is about mobile lung cancer screening in Europe.
The Athens shoot was part of a wider 3-city project that also took us to Heraklion in Crete and Chełm in Poland.
The brief was a couple of expert interviews with Greek doctors plus patient stories at the screening location.
Final edits with English subtitles were delivered for all 3 cities together.
We sent 2 videographers, one main and one with director skills as the second, plus an assistant.
The reason for the second videographer was so the main one could focus on the camera while the other one ran the director role on set.
Both spoke fluent English, which matters when the brief is coming from a London-based producer and the interviewees are Greek-speaking, you don't want translation chains getting in the way.
What to look out for in Athens for this kind of project: medical and healthcare topics need consent forms translated into Greek for participants, sort that days before the shoot, not on the day.
The interviewees almost always speak some English but you should still plan for native-language responses and add subtitles in post, this is what we did for SOLACE.
Good local crews are around in Athens but the strong English-speaking ones are limited, so you need to book early.
We also had a local fixer, Iris, who handled the on-the-ground coordination at the screening site, and that was the difference between a smooth day and a slow one.
