Atomized Studios reached out for a Senior Leadership Meeting shoot in Cairo for one of their pharma clients.
The location was the General Authority for Healthcare Accreditation and Regulation, out in the Cairo Governorate Desert, which is a government building so we had extra layers to clear before the day.
We sent a 3-person crew with our local fixer Bassem, who handled the venue access and translated between the agency team and the local staff.
Equipment was kept lean, primary camera with Sony glass, basic lighting, lavs on the speakers.
Cairo is honestly a challenging shoot location, the bureaucracy can slow you down even when permits are pre-approved.
Same thing happened at COP27 in Egypt back in 2022.
Things to look out for in Cairo: carnet paperwork for camera gear coming in and out of the country needs to be sorted weeks before the shoot, not days; government buildings will sometimes change permitted equipment lists at the last minute (no drones, lighting limits, that kind of thing); finding crew who speak fluent English is harder than you'd think; and a strong local fixer is non-negotiable, you cannot send a foreign crew in without someone who knows the system.
Bassem is the reason this one went smoothly.
The final shoot location was confirmed only the night before, which is also a Cairo thing, you have to stay flexible right up to call time.
Sometimes less gear is better here too because it draws less attention from security staff.
The client was happy with the coverage in the end.
