Colon
Colon for Corporate Video: Panama Canal Atlantic Gateway and Free Zone
Colon is the second-largest city in Panama and the Caribbean entrance to the Panama Canal. The city is best known for hosting the Colon Free Zone, the largest free trade zone in the Americas and second-largest globally (after the comprehensive port complexes of Hong Kong/Shenzhen). The Free Zone serves as a re-export hub for goods moving between Asia, the Americas, and Europe. For corporate productions involving the Colon Free Zone, Panama Canal Atlantic-side operations, or Caribbean logistics, Colon is the natural location. Most production logistics coordinate from Panama City (about 90 minutes by road).
Industry Landscape
Free Zone re-export trade dominates the local economy. The Colon Free Zone hosts hundreds of distributors, importers, and re-exporters working with Asian-manufactured goods destined for Latin America and the Caribbean. Port and logistics activity around the Atlantic-side Manzanillo International Terminal, Cristobal Port, and the new container facilities. Panama Canal operations on the Atlantic side, including the Gatun Locks. Tourism with cruise ship traffic.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
The Colon Free Zone itself (a secured commercial zone) holds the major re-export operations. Cristobal and the surrounding port area hold logistics operations. The Gatun Locks and the Agua Clara visitor center hold Panama Canal-related shoots. The historic Colon downtown is undergoing redevelopment.
Crew Base
Colon has minimal local production crew. All production crew comes from Panama City (about 90 minutes by road, the Panama Canal Railway runs alongside). Equipment is shipped from Panama City for most shoots.
Climate and Security
Tropical. Hot and humid year-round. Wet season May through December with significant rainfall. Best outdoor shooting weather January through April. Security considerations exist in some neighborhoods of central Colon; we work through secure corporate environments and Free Zone access.
Production Logistics in Colon
Reference for projects on the Panama Canal Atlantic side.
Time Zone
Eastern Standard Time (EST, UTC-5). No daylight saving.
Language
Spanish is the official language. English is widely used in the Free Zone and international logistics contexts.
Currency
US Dollar (USD) and Panamanian Balboa (PAB, pegged 1:1 with USD). The USD is the everyday transactional currency.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
120V at 60Hz. Type A and B plugs (US standard). Default 29.97fps NTSC or 23.976fps for cinematic work.
Airport
Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City is the main gateway, about 90 minutes from Colon by road. Direct flights to most major Americas business cities. Colon's Enrique Adolfo Jimenez Airport handles minimal traffic.
Free Zone Access
For Colon Free Zone filming, access coordinates through the relevant tenant company and Free Zone administration. Lead times of 2 to 4 weeks are typical. Photography restrictions apply in certain commercial areas.
Panama Canal Authority Coordination
For Gatun Locks, Agua Clara visitor center, or other Canal operations filming, advance permission from the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is essential. Lead times of 4 to 6 weeks are typical.
Permits
Colon municipality and the Panama Film Commission handle filming permits. Lead times of 1 to 2 weeks for standard work, longer for Free Zone and Canal-affiliated locations.
