Kathmandu for Corporate Video: Nepal's Himalayan Gateway
Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal and the operational base for nearly all corporate communications work in the country. The Nepalese economy is anchored by tourism (Nepal is the global gateway to Everest, the Annapurna circuit, and the broader Himalayan trekking and mountaineering industry), remittances from Nepali workers abroad (one of the largest remittance economies in the world by GDP share), and a growing banking and telecommunications sector. Nepal Investment Bank, Nabil Bank, Standard Chartered Nepal, Ncell, and Nepal Telecom are the major corporate communications clients. Hydroelectric power is increasingly significant as Nepal develops its substantial Himalayan water resources. We are direct with clients about the operational realities: Nepal recovered from devastating 2015 earthquakes and continues to navigate political and economic transitions, but standard corporate communications work proceeds normally with established local crew relationships.
Industry Landscape
Tourism and adventure travel anchored by the Himalayan trekking and mountaineering industries. Banking with the major Nepalese banks. Telecommunications with Ncell and Nepal Telecom. Hydroelectric power with rapid development of the country's mountain water resources. Remittances and labor migration services. Limited manufacturing.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
Thamel and the central tourist district hold the major hotels and traveler-focused operations. The Naya Baneshwor area holds modern corporate offices and the new convention complex. Patan (Lalitpur, just south of central Kathmandu) holds traditional commerce and growing modern corporate facilities. The Durbar Squares (UNESCO World Heritage sites still recovering from 2015 earthquake damage) are iconic for brand B-roll. Pokhara (the second-largest Nepalese city, about 30 minutes by air or 6 hours by road) holds substantial tourism and adventure travel operations.
Crew Base
Kathmandu has a small but capable production crew base built around the tourism, adventure travel, and limited commercial production markets. For larger productions, crews are sometimes augmented from Delhi or Mumbai.
Climate and Altitude
Kathmandu sits at approximately 1,400 meters elevation. The climate is temperate with distinct dry season (October through May, best outdoor shooting weather) and monsoon season (June through September with heavy rainfall and frequent flight delays at Tribhuvan International Airport). For shoots involving higher altitude Himalayan locations, altitude acclimatization planning is essential.
Production Logistics in Kathmandu
Reference for projects in Nepal.
Time Zone
Nepal Time (NPT, UTC+5:45). Nepal is one of the few countries with a 45-minute offset from UTC, sitting 15 minutes ahead of Indian Standard Time. No daylight saving.
Language
Nepali is the official language. English is widely used in international corporate, banking, and tourism contexts.
Currency
Nepalese Rupee (NPR). The NPR is pegged to the Indian Rupee at 1.6 NPR per INR. Most international B2B production work is invoiced in USD.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
230V at 50Hz. Type C, D, and M plugs are all encountered (mixed European, Indian, and South African styles within the same city). Bring versatile adapters. Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work. Power supply can be irregular; reliable venues have backup generators.
Airport
Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) is Nepal's main international gateway, with direct flights to major Asian, Middle Eastern, and limited European business cities. About 20 to 30 minutes from central Kathmandu in non-monsoon conditions. The airport experiences frequent weather-related delays particularly during monsoon season.
Visa and Filming Permits
Most international visitors can obtain visas on arrival. Filming permits coordinate through the Department of Information and Broadcasting and, for restricted areas (border zones, conservation areas, certain mountain regions), the relevant authority. Lead times of 4 to 8 weeks are typical.
Altitude Considerations
Kathmandu sits at 1,400 meters elevation. For shoots involving travel to higher altitude (Everest Base Camp at 5,364 meters, Annapurna circuit areas), altitude acclimatization planning is essential. Helicopter access is available for higher altitude shoots.
Customs and Equipment
ATA Carnets are accepted but customs procedures can be detailed. Allow extra time for equipment processing.
