London for Corporate Video: One of the World's Three Production Capitals
London is, alongside New York and Los Angeles, one of three global production capitals. The city holds the world's deepest non-US English-language production crew base, the financial center of Europe, and one of the largest concentrations of corporate headquarters anywhere on the planet. As a producer working across Europe, London is where I default to for any corporate brief that spans European financial services, pharma, tech, government, or major international corporate communications work.
The Geography of Corporate London
The City of London (the Square Mile) holds traditional banking, insurance, and law firms: HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, Standard Chartered, the major insurance market at Lloyd's of London. Canary Wharf, east of the City, holds the modern financial district: Barclays, Citi, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, HSBC's group HQ, and many fund managers. The West End and Mayfair hold hedge funds, private equity, and family offices. Soho and Fitzrovia hold media, advertising, and creative agencies (and the post-production heartland of UK film). King's Cross has become the tech corridor, anchored by Google's new King's Cross campus.
Industry Concentration
Financial services is the dominant sector. Asset management, banking, insurance, fund administration, fintech, and the broader professional services around them generate the bulk of corporate production demand. Pharma and life sciences have a significant London corridor extending into Cambridge and the broader South East. Tech is concentrated around King's Cross, Shoreditch, and Whitechapel. Media and creative industries are anchored in Soho. Legal services around the Inns of Court drive a steady volume of corporate communications work.
Crew Depth and Production Infrastructure
London has one of the world's deepest production crew bases. Camera, sound, lighting, grip, post-production, specialty kit, and broadcast crews are all available in volume across every tier and across every specialty (corporate, commercial, broadcast, documentary, drama). Lead times for standard corporate productions are typically short outside of London Fashion Week (February and September) and the major film and TV awards season.
Venues and Major Events
ExCeL London (Royal Docks) and Olympia London handle the largest trade fairs and corporate conferences. The QEII Centre in Westminster hosts government and corporate events. Major hotels with conference facilities include the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, The Savoy, the Corinthia London, and dozens of others. Major recurring events include London Tech Week, the London Wine Fair, Cannes Lions in nearby France with significant London corporate activity, and CityWeek for financial services.
Climate and Production Calendar
Temperate maritime. Mild summers, cool winters, frequent rain throughout the year. The most reliable shooting weather is May through September. Long daylight hours in summer, very short days in December and January.
Production Logistics in London
Reference for projects in Greater London.
Time Zone
GMT winter (UTC+0), BST summer (UTC+1). The default for UK and Western European business hours coordination.
Language
English. Dozens of other languages encountered in different corporate environments depending on industry and location.
Currency
British Pound (GBP). London is one of the world's largest foreign exchange centers.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
230V at 50Hz. Type G plugs (UK three-pin). Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial and streaming work.
Airports
London Heathrow (LHR) is the main international gateway. London Gatwick (LGW), Stansted (STN), Luton (LTN), and London City (LCY) handle additional routes. London City is closest to the financial districts and is favored for executive day trips. London Southend (SEN) is the most distant.
ULEZ and Vehicle Movement
The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) covers most of Greater London and applies to non-compliant vehicles entering the zone. For productions with crew vehicles, ULEZ compliance and the Congestion Charge zone in central London affect logistics and costs.
Permits
Film London is the central coordinating body for filming permits across most London boroughs. Each borough also handles its own permits. The City of London (the Square Mile) has its own film office. Westminster has its own permits. Lead times typically 1 to 3 weeks for standard corporate work. For Parliament Square, royal parks, iconic landmarks, or filming with road closures, longer lead times apply.
Movement Across London
London is geographically large and traffic is heavy. Cross-London moves typically take 45 to 90 minutes depending on origin, destination, and time of day. The London Underground (Tube) is often faster than driving for crew without equipment vehicles. The Elizabeth Line (opened 2022) connects east and west London efficiently.
