Malmo for Corporate Video: Sweden's Southern Gateway
I shoot in Malmo regularly because the city sits in an unusual strategic position: connected to Copenhagen via the Oresund Bridge (about 35 minutes by train), Malmo functions as part of a single integrated Oresund region cross-border economy. For corporate productions targeting southern Sweden and Denmark from a single base, or for Swedish operations of companies headquartered in Copenhagen, Malmo is the right location. The city has also built a significant tech and gaming industry (Massive Entertainment, a major Ubisoft studio, is headquartered here) and serves as the operational center for the broader Skane region.
Industry Landscape
Tech and gaming anchored by Massive Entertainment, King (parts of King's operations are in Malmo), and a growing startup ecosystem. Logistics and shipping built around the Port of Malmo and the strategic Oresund position. Food and beverage manufacturing remains a significant traditional sector. Renewable energy and cleantech have grown rapidly, with Malmo positioned as a Nordic cleantech hub. Healthcare and life sciences have a regional role anchored by Skane University Hospital.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
Vastra Hamnen (the Western Harbour) holds modern corporate offices, the Turning Torso, and many tech firms. Central Malmo around Stortorget holds traditional corporate offices and major hotels. Hyllie, near the Oresund Bridge approach, is a growing business district.
Crew Base
Malmo has a working production crew base supplemented by the larger Copenhagen crew base just across the bridge. For larger productions, crew often crosses the Oresund Bridge as part of the standard production logistics.
Climate
Temperate maritime, milder than central or northern Sweden thanks to the southern coastal location. Mild summers, cool winters with occasional snow. Best outdoor shooting weather May through September.
Production Logistics in Malmo
Reference for projects in southern Sweden and the Oresund region.
Time Zone
Central European Time (CET, UTC+1) winter, Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2) summer.
Language
Swedish is the official language. English is very widely spoken across business and tech contexts.
Currency
Swedish Krona (SEK). Sweden is in the EU but not the Eurozone. For cross-border Oresund region productions, both SEK and DKK (Danish Krone) may apply.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
230V at 50Hz. Type C and F plugs (European standard). Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work.
Airports
Copenhagen Airport (CPH) is the primary gateway, about 25 to 35 minutes from central Malmo via the Oresund Bridge. Malmo Airport (MMX) handles limited domestic and regional flights. CPH offers far more international connections.
Oresund Bridge Crossing
The Oresund Bridge connects Malmo to Copenhagen by road and rail. The toll for commercial vehicles is significant; for productions with crew vehicles, factor in approximately 70 EUR per car crossing each way. Trains cross frequently.
Permits
Malmo municipality handles filming permits. Lead times of 1 to 2 weeks are typical for standard corporate work.
