Nuuk for Corporate Video: Greenland's Tiny But Specialized Market
Nuuk is the capital of Greenland and one of the smallest national capitals in the world by population. With roughly 17,000 residents, Nuuk's corporate production market is genuinely small but specialized. The work that comes here is typically tied to specific industries that only Greenland offers: rare earth and mineral mining, fishing and seafood, polar and climate science, and increasingly tourism. For productions in these sectors, Nuuk is not optional.
Why Productions Come to Nuuk
Three core categories. First, mining and exploration: Greenland holds significant rare earth element deposits and has growing international corporate attention from mining companies. Second, climate and arctic science: research institutions and corporations engaged in climate science, polar logistics, and environmental work. Third, fishing and seafood industries: Royal Greenland and other fishing companies headquarter or operate from Nuuk.
Crew Reality
Nuuk does not have a local professional production crew base. For any meaningful corporate production, crews are flown in from Copenhagen, Iceland, or other Scandinavian production centers. Camera, sound, and lighting equipment typically ship with the crew. Lead times are longer than for mainland European productions.
Logistics Difficulty
Nuuk is one of the more logistically challenging production destinations. Limited flight connections, weather-dependent scheduling (flights cancel for fog and storms), short summer shooting windows, and high costs all factor in. For corporate productions with budget flexibility and a story that genuinely requires Greenland, the result is unique and unrepeatable.
Climate and Light
Subarctic. Summers (June to August) bring extended daylight (near 24-hour daylight in mid-summer). Winters bring extreme cold, snow, and only a few hours of daylight. For outdoor work, June through August is the practical shooting window.

Time Zone
Western Greenland Time (WGT, UTC-2). Greenland shifted from UTC-3 to UTC-2 in 2023 and now observes daylight saving alongside Europe.
Language
Greenlandic (Kalaallisut) is the official language. Danish is also widely used in business and government. English is common among younger professionals.
Currency
Danish Krone (DKK). Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark.
Electrical Standards
220V at 50Hz. Plug types C, E, F, and K are encountered (same as Denmark).
Frame Rate
50Hz region. Default 25fps PAL or 24fps for commercial work.
Airport
Nuuk Airport (GOH) has limited flight connections. Most international arrivals connect through Copenhagen or Iceland. Direct intercontinental flights are extremely limited. A new larger international airport is under development for Nuuk.
Equipment Shipping
For productions shipping crew and kit, allow 5 to 10 business days for freight. Customs procedures apply (Greenland is not in the EU customs union despite being a Danish territory). ATA Carnets are recommended for professional equipment.
Permits
Filming permits in Greenland require coordination with the Government of Greenland. For mineral exploration sites, mining company approvals also apply. Lead times of 4 to 8 weeks are realistic.
