Tainan for Corporate Video: Taiwan's Heritage Capital and Semiconductor Corridor
I have a particular fondness for shooting in Tainan because it offers something that newer Taiwanese cities cannot: deep historical character. Tainan was the original capital of Taiwan until the late 19th century and the city's old streets, Confucian temples, and Anping Fort area give corporate productions a sense of place that is hard to find elsewhere in Taiwan. Beyond heritage, Tainan also holds the Tainan Science Park, a major semiconductor and optoelectronics cluster that anchors significant corporate communications demand. For productions involving Taiwanese manufacturing or brand work that benefits from historical character, Tainan is a strong choice.
Industry Landscape
Semiconductor manufacturing anchored by the Tainan Science Park (with major fabs including TSMC operations) drives the high-tech industrial side. Optoelectronics, including LED and solar manufacturing, has a significant Tainan cluster. Food and beverage manufacturing, traditional Taiwanese industries, and a growing tourism sector around the city's heritage areas complete the picture.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
The Tainan Science Park in southern Tainan holds the semiconductor and optoelectronics facilities. The downtown heritage area around the Confucius Temple, Anping Fort, and the old streets is iconic for brand B-roll. Modern commercial development concentrates around Tainan Railway Station and the East District.
Crew Base
Tainan has a working production crew base, smaller than Taipei but with strong access to semiconductor facilities and heritage locations. For larger productions, crews are sometimes augmented from Taipei (about 90 minutes by high-speed rail).
Climate
Subtropical. Hot, humid summers. Mild, dry winters. Typhoon season runs June through October. Best outdoor shooting weather November through April.
Production Logistics in Tainan
Reference for projects in southern Taiwan.
Time Zone
Taiwan Time (TWT, UTC+8). No daylight saving.
Language
Mandarin Chinese is the official language. Taiwanese Hokkien is widely spoken in Tainan more than in northern Taiwan. English is encountered in international corporate and tech sectors.
Currency
New Taiwan Dollar (TWD). Most international B2B production work is invoiced in USD.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
110V at 60Hz. Type A and B plugs (US-compatible at 110V). Default 29.97fps NTSC or 23.976fps for commercial work.
Airport
Tainan Airport (TNN) handles limited domestic and regional flights. Most international travel connects through Taipei Taoyuan (TPE), about 90 minutes by high-speed rail from Tainan.
Semiconductor Facility Access
Filming at Tainan Science Park semiconductor facilities requires significant advance coordination, NDA and IP protocol compliance, and often customer approval depending on the fab and product. Lead times of 4 to 8 weeks are realistic.
Permits
Tainan City Government handles filming permits. For heritage sites including the Confucius Temple and Anping Fort, additional cultural heritage authority approvals apply. Lead times of 1 to 3 weeks are typical.
