Antananarivo for Corporate Video: Madagascar's Island Capital
Antananarivo (often shortened to Tana) is the capital of Madagascar and the operational base for nearly all corporate communications work on the island. Madagascar is one of the largest islands in the world and home to a unique biodiversity. The economy is built around vanilla production (Madagascar produces approximately 80% of the world's vanilla), textile manufacturing (with substantial operations under AGOA preferences for US-bound exports), mining (cobalt, ilmenite, nickel), and a small but growing tourism sector. The major French banks (BNI Madagascar - BNP Paribas affiliate, BFV Societe Generale, BMOI) anchor financial services along with the local Banque Centrale de Madagascar. For corporate productions involving Madagascar's vanilla industry, mining operations, textile sector, or distinctive island biodiversity content, Antananarivo is the natural operational base.
Industry Landscape
Vanilla production with Madagascar producing the majority of global vanilla supply, generating substantial corporate communications work around supply chain, sustainability, and farmer cooperative content. Textile manufacturing with substantial operations under preferential trade arrangements. Mining with Ambatovy nickel-cobalt operations (one of the largest mining investments in Africa) and other major mining operations. Tourism focused on Madagascar's unique biodiversity. Banking with the major French-affiliated banks. Telecommunications with Telma, Orange Madagascar, and Airtel Madagascar.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
Antananarivo's Haute-Ville (upper city) holds the Presidential Palace, government ministries, and historic architecture. The Analakely market area holds traditional commerce. The Antaninarenina district holds traditional corporate offices and major hotels. The Tana Waterfront and surrounding modern developments hold contemporary corporate facilities. The major industrial zones outside the city hold textile and manufacturing operations.
Crew Base
Antananarivo has a small but capable production crew base. For larger productions, crews are sometimes augmented from Nairobi, Johannesburg, or Mauritius.
Climate and Travel
Tropical highland. Antananarivo sits at approximately 1,300 meters elevation, moderating the tropical climate. Cool dry season (May through October, best outdoor shooting weather) and warm wet season (November through April with significant rainfall and cyclone risk along the coasts). The interior is generally accessible year-round; coastal vanilla and mining areas require careful seasonal planning.
Production Logistics in Antananarivo
Reference for projects in Madagascar.
Time Zone
East Africa Time (EAT, UTC+3). No daylight saving.
Language
Malagasy and French are both official languages. French is widely used in business, government, and international corporate contexts. English is increasingly common in international corporate and mining contexts.
Currency
Malagasy Ariary (MGA). Most international B2B production work is invoiced in EUR or USD.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
220V at 50Hz. Type C, D, E, J, and K plugs are all encountered (various European, Indian, and Swiss styles). Bring versatile adapters. Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work.
Airport
Ivato International Airport (TNR) handles direct flights to Paris, Johannesburg, Mauritius, Nairobi, and limited other destinations. About 30 to 45 minutes from central Antananarivo. Air Madagascar is the national carrier but service is limited; Air France, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, and others operate the major international connections.
Vanilla Region Access
For vanilla industry shoots, the SAVA region (Sambava, Antalaha, Vohemar, Andapa) in northeastern Madagascar is the main production area. Access requires domestic flights (subject to cancellation) plus road travel. Lead times of 6 to 12 weeks are typical for productions involving SAVA region work.
Permits
The Ministry of Communication and Culture handles filming permits. Lead times of 4 to 8 weeks are typical for sensitive content.
Customs and Equipment
ATA Carnets are accepted but customs procedures can be detailed. Allow extra time for equipment processing.
