Bern for Corporate Video: The Swiss Federal Capital
Bern is the federal capital of Switzerland (de facto, since Switzerland constitutionally has no formal capital) and the seat of the Swiss federal government, including the Federal Assembly, the Federal Council, and most federal ministries. While Zurich holds the commercial weight and Geneva holds the international institutions, Bern holds the Swiss political center. For corporate productions involving Swiss federal government communications, lobbying and public affairs work, or organizations operating in the federal political ecosystem, Bern is the right location.
Industry Landscape
Federal government and the central ministries drive a significant share of corporate work. Public affairs and lobbying firms cluster in central Bern around the Bundeshaus. The Swiss Post and Swisscom (both with significant Bern operations) generate substantial corporate communications work. The pharmaceutical sector has a Bern presence with Galenica and other Bern-region firms. The University of Bern and the federal research institutions generate research-related corporate work.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
The Bundesplatz and surrounding government quarter hold the federal ministries and Bundeshaus. Central Bern along Marktgasse and Spitalgasse holds traditional corporate offices and the major hotels. Wankdorf and the surrounding industrial area hold Swisscom, Swiss Post, and modern corporate offices.
Crew Base
Bern has a working production crew base built around the Swiss public broadcaster SRG SSR (which has significant Bern operations) and the local commercial production market. For larger productions, crews are sometimes augmented from Zurich (about an hour by train).
Climate
Temperate continental. Warm summers, cool winters with occasional snow. Best outdoor shooting weather May through September.
Production Logistics in Bern
Reference for projects in central Switzerland.
Time Zone
Central European Time (CET, UTC+1) winter, Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2) summer.
Language
German (Swiss German dialect locally; standard German in business writing) is the official local language. French is encountered given proximity to the language border. English is the working language for international corporate productions.
Currency
Swiss Franc (CHF). Most international B2B production work is invoiced in CHF, EUR, or USD.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
230V at 50Hz. Type J plugs (Swiss-specific). Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work.
Airport
Bern Airport (BRN) handles limited domestic and regional flights. Zurich Airport (ZRH) is the typical international gateway, about an hour by train. Geneva (GVA) and Basel (BSL) are alternatives.
Federal Government Facility Access
For shoots at the Bundeshaus, federal ministries, or other government facilities, advance media accreditation and security clearance are essential. Lead times of 2 to 4 weeks are typical depending on the location and content.
Permits
Bern canton handles filming permits. Lead times of 1 to 2 weeks are typical for standard corporate work.
Customs and Equipment
Switzerland is not in the EU customs union. ATA Carnets are essential.
