Cape Town for Corporate Video: Africa's Film and Tech Capital
I work in Cape Town often because the city has built one of the world's most active commercial production environments alongside its growing tech and corporate sector. Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa (Parliament sits here), home to Naspers (the global tech investment company best known for its early Tencent stake), Discovery Group, Old Mutual, and a substantial tech and creative industry. The city is also one of the world's top international commercial production destinations thanks to the strong Rand-to-Euro/Dollar exchange rate, varied locations within short driving distances, and a deep production crew infrastructure built over decades.
Industry Landscape
Tech anchored by Naspers, Prosus, Takealot (the leading South African e-commerce platform, Naspers-owned), and a substantial startup ecosystem. Financial services and insurance with Old Mutual, Sanlam, and Discovery Group. Film and commercial production at scale; Cape Town has hosted productions for international clients across automotive, fashion, technology, and consumer goods. Hospitality and tourism anchored by the city's status as one of the world's top tourist destinations. Wine industry corporate work given the surrounding Stellenbosch and Franschhoek wine regions.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
The V&A Waterfront holds the major luxury hotels and modern corporate venues. The City Bowl and Foreshore hold traditional corporate offices and Parliament. The Cape Town CBD around Long Street and Bree Street holds tech firms and creative agencies. Century City holds modern suburban corporate offices. Stellenbosch (about 50 minutes from Cape Town) holds the wine industry and Stellenbosch University.
Crew Base
Cape Town has one of the world's deepest production crew bases outside the major Northern Hemisphere capitals, built around international commercial production demand. Camera, sound, lighting, grip, post-production, drone operators, and broadcast crews are all available at international standard with very strong location production experience.
Climate
Mediterranean. Warm dry summers (November to March) and mild wet winters. The Cape Doctor southeasterly wind affects production scheduling during summer months. Best outdoor shooting weather November through April. Cape Town has more sunshine hours than nearly any other major Southern Hemisphere city.
Production Logistics in Cape Town
Reference for projects in the Western Cape.
Time Zone
South Africa Standard Time (SAST, UTC+2). No daylight saving.
Language
South Africa has 11 official languages. English is the working language for business and international corporate productions. Afrikaans and Xhosa are widely encountered in the Western Cape.
Currency
South African Rand (ZAR). Most international B2B production work is invoiced in USD, EUR, or ZAR. The favorable exchange rate is a key reason Cape Town has become a top international commercial production destination.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
230V at 50Hz. Type M (large 3-pin South African plug) is standard. Type N and Type D also encountered. Bring South African-specific adapters. Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work.
Airport
Cape Town International Airport (CPT) handles direct flights to most major European business cities and connections globally. About 20 to 30 minutes from central Cape Town. Direct flights to London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and many others.
Permits
The Cape Town Film Permits Office (within the Cape Town Film Commission and city government) handles filming coordination. The Western Cape has one of the world's most developed film permit infrastructures. Lead times of 1 to 2 weeks are typical for standard corporate work. Heritage sites and Table Mountain National Park have additional permitting.
Customs and Equipment
South Africa accepts ATA Carnets. Major productions sometimes use local rental house equipment to simplify customs.
