Groningen for Corporate Video: Northern Netherlands Hub
Groningen is the largest city in the northern Netherlands and the operational center for the regional corporate market. The city has been historically linked to the Groningen gas field (one of the largest natural gas fields in the world, now being phased down following decades of seismic damage to the region). Gasunie (the Dutch gas infrastructure operator) and the broader Dutch energy transition activities have substantial Groningen-region presence. The University of Groningen anchors a substantial research and innovation sector. Energy transition with hydrogen pilots and renewable energy projects is increasingly relevant. For corporate productions involving Dutch energy transition, the northern Netherlands corporate community, or University of Groningen research communications, the city is the natural location.
Industry Landscape
Energy transition has replaced traditional gas as the major regional theme. Gasunie operates major hydrogen and grid transformation projects. The University of Groningen and the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) drive research and life sciences activity. Some manufacturing and food processing operate in the broader region. The Eemshaven port (about 30 minutes north of Groningen) hosts substantial offshore wind operations and data center activity. Banking with regional operations of the major Dutch banks. Tech with a growing Groningen IT sector.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
Central Groningen around the Grote Markt holds traditional corporate offices and the major hotels. The university campus and UMCG hold research operations. The Suikerunie area and the Reitdiep holds modern corporate facilities. The Eemshaven complex (about 30 minutes north) holds energy infrastructure shoots.
Crew Base
Groningen has a small production crew base. For larger productions, crews are augmented from Amsterdam (about 2 hours by road or train) or Rotterdam.
Climate
Maritime temperate with northern Netherlands characteristics. Cool wet winters and mild summers. Best outdoor shooting weather April through October.
Production Logistics in Groningen
Reference for projects in the northern Netherlands.
Time Zone
Central European Time (CET, UTC+1) winter, Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2) summer.
Language
Dutch is the official language. English is universally used in international corporate contexts. Frisian is also an official language in nearby Friesland.
Currency
Euro (EUR). The Netherlands is in the EU and the Eurozone.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
230V at 50Hz. Type C and F plugs (European standard). Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work.
Airport
Groningen Airport Eelde (GRQ) handles limited regional traffic. Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is the main practical gateway, about 2 hours by direct train. The new Lelylijn rail project (under planning) may reduce that significantly.
Energy Facility Access
For Gasunie or energy facility access, advance security clearance, NDA execution, and operational coordination apply. Lead times of 2 to 4 weeks are typical.
Permits
Groningen municipality handles filming permits. Lead times of 1 to 2 weeks are typical for standard corporate work.
