Istanbul for Corporate Video: The East-West Gateway
I work in Istanbul regularly and the city's unique position straddling Europe and Asia gives it a distinctive role in corporate production. With over 15 million people, Istanbul is one of the largest urban economies in EMEA. The city anchors Turkish banking and finance, manufacturing, logistics, media, and tourism, and serves as a major regional headquarters for multinationals targeting the Middle East, Central Asia, and the broader region. For corporate productions involving Turkish business, MENA regional communications, or East-West gateway brand work, Istanbul is the natural location.
Industry Landscape
Banking and finance is anchored in Levent, the modern business district on the European side. Manufacturing concentrates in the Anatolian (Asian) side and the surrounding industrial zones. The textile and apparel industry, while consolidating, remains globally significant. Media is concentrated around major TV networks and the Beyoğlu creative district. Tourism and hospitality, anchored by the Old City and modern hotels along the Bosphorus, drive a significant share of corporate brand work.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
Levent and Maslak hold most major corporate offices and the financial district. The European side along the Bosphorus holds major hotels and event venues. The Old City (Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu) is iconic for brand B-roll but heavily regulated for filming. The Asian side, particularly Kadıköy, holds creative agencies and tech firms.
Crew Base
Istanbul has one of the deepest production crew bases in the EMEA region outside London and the major Western European cities. Camera, sound, lighting, post-production, and specialty kit are all available at international standard.
Climate
Mediterranean transitioning toward continental. Hot, humid summers. Cool winters with occasional snow. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable shooting weather.
Production Logistics in Istanbul
Reference for projects in northwest Turkey.
Time Zone
Turkey Time (TRT, UTC+3). No daylight saving since 2016.
Language
Turkish is the working language. English is widely used in international business contexts.
Currency
Turkish Lira (TRY). Most international B2B production work is invoiced in USD or EUR.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
220V at 50Hz. Plug types C and F. Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work.
Airports
Istanbul Airport (IST), opened in 2018, is the main international gateway and home to Turkish Airlines. Sabiha Gökçen International (SAW) on the Asian side handles additional traffic, particularly low-cost carriers. IST is about 45 to 75 minutes from central Istanbul depending on traffic.
Cross-Bosphorus Movement
Istanbul straddles two continents. Cross-Bosphorus moves typically take 30 to 90 minutes depending on bridge or tunnel selection and time of day. The Eurasia Tunnel and Marmaray rail tunnel offer alternatives during peak congestion.
Permits
Filming permits in Istanbul are coordinated through the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and, for the Old City and heritage sites, additional cultural ministry approvals apply. Lead times of 2 to 4 weeks are typical for standard corporate work. For the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, or Blue Mosque, longer and more restricted permitting applies.
