Kyiv for Corporate Video: An Active Conflict Zone
Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine and, as of this writing, the operational center of a country in active conflict. Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022 and the war continues. Corporate production in Kyiv remains possible and a significant local crew base continues to work, but the operating environment is fundamentally different from peacetime. Any client considering a corporate shoot in Kyiv must understand the constraints: air raid alerts that pause shooting, periodic infrastructure attacks affecting power and connectivity, curfew restrictions, mandatory safety protocols, and significant insurance considerations. We are honest about all of this in scoping any project here.
What Corporate Work Still Happens
Ukrainian tech outsourcing companies (which remained operational through the war) generate continued corporate communications work. Defense industry contractors based in Kyiv (and the broader Ukrainian defense sector) produce content for international partners. Government and post-war reconstruction communications work has grown. NGO and humanitarian organization productions, while not strictly corporate, share the same logistics base. International corporate clients with Ukrainian operations or partnerships occasionally commission shoots here.
Safety and Risk Considerations
Air raid alerts via mobile app and public sirens are the standard daily reality. Shoots pause during alerts. Insurance for crew, equipment, and personnel is essential and not all international insurers will cover Ukraine. We work with specialist conflict-zone insurance providers. Recommended safety briefings, hard cover identification (the nearest shelter), and contingency plans for evacuation are standard parts of project planning.
Crew Base
A working Ukrainian production crew base continues to operate in Kyiv. Camera, sound, and basic kit are available locally. Many crew members have continued working through the war with appropriate safety training and equipment.
Climate
Continental. Cold winters with snow. Hot summers. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable shooting weather, with the practical constraint that war timing matters more than season.
Production Logistics in Kyiv
Reference for projects in Ukraine under wartime conditions.
Time Zone
Eastern European Time (EET, UTC+2) winter, Eastern European Summer Time (EEST, UTC+3) summer.
Language
Ukrainian is the official and increasingly the primary language. Russian, historically widely used, has declined significantly in business contexts since the 2022 invasion. English is encountered in international corporate and tech sectors.
Currency
Ukrainian Hryvnia (UAH). Most international B2B production work is invoiced in USD or EUR. Hryvnia exchange and banking has been operating through the war but with some restrictions.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
220V at 50Hz. Plug types C and F. Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work.
Airport Status
Kyiv Boryspil International Airport (KBP) has been closed to commercial traffic since February 2022. International access to Kyiv is currently via long road or rail journey from Poland (typically through Rzeszow or Krakow), Slovakia, Hungary, or Romania. Allow 12 to 20 hours total travel from Western Europe.
Insurance and Safety
War-risk insurance is essential. Specialist conflict-zone production insurers (rather than standard production insurance) cover Ukraine projects. Crew safety training, body armor and helmets for crew operating near front lines (not typically needed in Kyiv proper), and clear evacuation protocols are part of any project plan.
Curfew and Movement
Curfew restrictions vary and are subject to change. Currently a nighttime curfew applies in Kyiv. Movement during curfew hours requires military permits and is generally avoided.
Permits
Filming in Ukraine requires permits coordinated through the relevant government authorities. Defense and military area filming is heavily restricted and requires specific Ministry of Defence approval. Lead times have lengthened during wartime.
