La Paz for Corporate Video: Bolivia's Administrative Capital
La Paz is the administrative capital of Bolivia (the constitutional capital is Sucre) and the largest urban center of the country. La Paz sits at extraordinary altitude (the central city ranges from about 3,250 to 4,150 meters elevation, with the adjacent El Alto reaching 4,150 meters, making La Paz/El Alto one of the world's highest major urban areas). Bolivia is one of Latin America's poorer countries but has substantial mineral wealth (the country has the world's largest lithium reserves at the Salar de Uyuni and substantial silver, tin, and zinc operations). The major Bolivian banks include Banco Mercantil Santa Cruz, Banco Nacional de Bolivia, and Banco BISA. For corporate productions involving Bolivian business, Andean regional work, lithium industry, or distinctive high-altitude content, La Paz is the natural location.
Industry Landscape
Mining with substantial silver, tin, zinc, plus the major lithium reserves at the Salar de Uyuni. Banking with Banco Mercantil Santa Cruz, Banco Nacional de Bolivia, BISA. Government with the Bolivian executive and legislative operations. Tourism with substantial Andean tourism including Lake Titicaca, the Salar de Uyuni, and the iconic high-altitude city itself. Telecommunications with regional operations.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
Central La Paz around Plaza Murillo holds the Bolivian government infrastructure and traditional corporate offices. The Zona Sur (the affluent southern district at lower altitude around 3,100 meters) holds modern corporate and residential development. El Alto (the adjacent city above central La Paz at 4,150 meters) holds substantial industrial and trade activity. The Salar de Uyuni (about 10 hours by road south) provides iconic salt flats B-roll. The Tiwanaku archaeological site (about 90 minutes from La Paz) provides distinctive pre-Columbian heritage content.
Crew Base
La Paz has a small production crew base. For larger productions, crews are sometimes augmented from Lima or Buenos Aires.
Climate and Altitude
Subtropical highland but with substantial altitude effects. Cool year-round given altitude. Wet season November through March, dry season April through October. Best outdoor shooting weather April through October. Altitude considerations are substantial (potential acute mountain sickness for crew arriving from sea level, with mandatory acclimatization).
Production Logistics in La Paz
Reference for projects in Bolivia.
Time Zone
Bolivia Time (BOT, UTC-4). Bolivia does not observe daylight saving.
Language
Spanish is the official language. Quechua and Aymara are also official indigenous languages and widely spoken culturally. English is encountered in international corporate and tourism contexts.
Currency
Bolivian Boliviano (BOB). Most international B2B production work is invoiced in USD.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
110V and 220V at 50Hz (mixed standards in Bolivia, unlike most of the Americas which uses 60Hz). Type A and C plugs. Default 25fps PAL or 29.97fps NTSC for commercial work (mixed standards).
Airport
El Alto International Airport (LPB) sits at about 4,061 meters elevation (one of the world's highest international airports). Handles direct flights to major Latin American cities. About 30 minutes from central La Paz with substantial altitude drop to Zona Sur.
Critical Altitude Considerations
La Paz altitude is among the highest of any major world city. Crew arriving from sea level should plan minimum 24 to 48 hours acclimatization, with substantial hydration, reduced physical exertion, and avoidance of alcohol. Some crew may experience acute mountain sickness symptoms. Pre-trip altitude medical consultation is recommended. Some heavy equipment work is reduced at altitude.
Permits
The Bolivian Ministry of Cultures, Tourism and Decolonization and La Paz municipality handle filming permits. Lead times of 4 to 8 weeks are typical.
