Locarno for Corporate Video: Festival Cinema and Italian-Speaking Switzerland
Locarno is a small lakeside town in Italian-speaking Switzerland (canton Ticino), best known internationally for the Locarno Film Festival held each August in the Piazza Grande. For most of the year, Locarno operates as a tourist destination and a quiet regional center. For corporate production, Locarno is a niche destination used primarily for film festival coverage in August, tourism brand work, and occasional Ticino-region corporate communications. We are honest about the seasonal pattern: outside the festival, Locarno production is rare.
The Locarno Film Festival
The festival (typically running early to mid August) draws international film industry attention with the open-air screenings on Piazza Grande as the signature event. Corporate clients with film industry partnerships, brand sponsors, or media coverage commission productions during the festival week. Crew availability tightens significantly during the festival.
Year-Round Locarno
Outside the festival, Locarno hosts a small business community focused on tourism, regional services, and Ticino-area corporate work. Bellinzona (the cantonal capital) and Lugano (the main Ticino financial center) are within easy reach for broader Ticino productions.
Crew Base
Locarno has minimal year-round production crew. During the festival, crew arrives from Lugano, Zurich, Milan, or further afield. For other corporate work, crew typically travels from Lugano (about 40 minutes by train) or Zurich.
Climate
Mediterranean-influenced subtropical thanks to the lake and the Alpine shelter. Warm sunny summers (often warmer than Milan). Mild winters by Swiss standards. Best outdoor shooting weather April through October.
Production Logistics in Locarno
Reference for projects in Italian-speaking Switzerland (Ticino).
Time Zone
Central European Time (CET, UTC+1) winter, Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2) summer.
Language
Italian is the local language. German and French are encountered in inter-Swiss business contexts. English is widely used in festival and international corporate productions.
Currency
Swiss Franc (CHF). Most international B2B production work is invoiced in CHF, EUR, or USD.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
230V at 50Hz. Type J plugs (Swiss-specific). Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work.
Airport
Lugano Airport (LUG) is the nearest Ticino airport, about 50 minutes by car or train from Locarno. Milan Malpensa (MXP) in Italy is about 90 minutes by road and offers far more international connections. Zurich Airport (ZRH) is about 3 hours by train.
Film Festival Logistics
During the Locarno Film Festival (typically early to mid August), hotel rooms, ground transport, and crew accommodation must be booked many months in advance. The festival has its own accreditation system governing venue access.
Permits
Ticino canton and the Locarno municipal authorities handle filming permits. Lead times of 1 to 2 weeks are typical for standard corporate work, longer for festival-period filming.
Customs and Equipment
Switzerland is not in the EU customs union. ATA Carnets are essential.
