Mumbai for Corporate Video: India's Financial and Entertainment Capital
I default to Mumbai for any major Indian corporate brief outside the tech industry. Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra and India's financial, commercial, and entertainment capital. The city anchors the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE, the oldest stock exchange in Asia, founded 1875) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE, the larger by trading volume), the Reserve Bank of India headquarters, and the major Indian corporate headquarters including Reliance Industries (one of India's largest conglomerates, headquartered in Mumbai), the Tata group (Tata Sons, Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, with major Mumbai operations), the Aditya Birla Group, Mahindra Group, Larsen and Toubro, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, State Bank of India (major Mumbai operations alongside Delhi), Axis Bank, the Adani Group, JSW Group, Godrej Group, and the major Indian pharma firms including Sun Pharmaceutical and Cipla. Layer on top Mumbai's role as the home of Bollywood (the substantial Hindi film industry, producing more films annually than Hollywood), and Mumbai ranks among India's most significant corporate production markets.
The Financial Services Anchor
Mumbai's role as India's financial capital generates substantial corporate communications demand. BSE and NSE anchor the equity markets, with the major Indian banks (HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI Mumbai operations, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank) all maintaining substantial Mumbai operations. The substantial M&A activity, earnings communications, investor relations work, and broader Indian capital markets activity generates continuous high-end corporate production demand.
Industry Landscape
Banking and financial services with the major Indian banks and the BSE/NSE. Conglomerates with Reliance (oil refining, petrochemicals, retail, telecom with Reliance Jio), the Tata group, Aditya Birla, Mahindra, Larsen and Toubro. Entertainment with Bollywood (Yash Raj Films, Dharma Productions, Red Chillies, T-Series, plus dozens of major production houses) anchoring substantial corporate entertainment industry communications. Pharmaceuticals with Sun Pharma, Cipla, and the substantial Indian pharma industry. Real estate with the major Indian developers. Telecommunications with Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel (with Mumbai operations alongside Delhi).
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC, the modern business district) holds NSE, the major banks, and modern corporate towers. Nariman Point (the historic financial district at the southern tip of Mumbai) holds BSE, the Reserve Bank of India, and traditional corporate offices. Lower Parel and Worli (the mid-Mumbai modern commercial districts) hold corporate offices and luxury hotels. Andheri East and the SEEPZ area hold tech and IT services operations. Film City (Goregaon) holds Bollywood studios. The Gateway of India and surrounding southern Mumbai hold iconic heritage architecture.
Crew Base
Mumbai has India's deepest production crew base, built around the substantial Bollywood film industry (the largest film industry in the world by number of films produced), the major Indian broadcast industry, the substantial commercial production industry, and frequent international shoots. Camera, sound, lighting, post-production, broadcast, and specialty crews are all available at the highest international standard.
Climate
Tropical wet and dry. Hot humid year-round. Best outdoor shooting weather November through February (the dry winter). Monsoon season June through September can severely affect outdoor production.
Production Logistics in Mumbai
Reference for projects in Maharashtra.
Time Zone
India Standard Time (IST, UTC+5:30). No daylight saving.
Language
Hindi and Marathi are the local languages. English is widely used in international corporate, banking, financial services, and Bollywood contexts. Mumbai has very high English proficiency.
Currency
Indian Rupee (INR). Most international B2B production work is invoiced in USD.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
230V at 50Hz. Type D, M, and C plugs (Indian and European). Bring versatile adapters. Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work.
Airport
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) handles direct flights to most major Asian, Middle Eastern, European, North American, and African business cities. About 45 to 90 minutes from central Mumbai depending on traffic. The new Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) is under development.
Mumbai Traffic and Monsoon
Mumbai traffic is famously difficult, particularly during monsoon season (June through September) when flooding can severely affect production schedules. Allow generous buffer times. The Western Express Highway, Eastern Express Highway, and the local train network are the main arteries.
Permits
The Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation (MFSCDC) and the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting handle filming permits. Lead times of 2 to 4 weeks are typical for standard corporate work. Foreign productions involve additional accreditation requirements.
