Okinawa for Corporate Video: Japan's Subtropical Island Prefecture
Okinawa is Japan's southernmost prefecture, a chain of subtropical islands sitting between mainland Japan, Taiwan, and the Chinese coast. The capital Naha (on the main island of Okinawa) anchors the prefecture. The Okinawan economy is built around tourism (the islands are Japan's premier domestic beach destination plus a growing international tourism market from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Korea), US military operations (Okinawa hosts a substantial portion of US military presence in Japan), and a smaller but distinctive agricultural and traditional industry sector (Okinawan sake-like awamori is the iconic local spirit; sugarcane and pineapple are major crops). For corporate productions involving Japanese subtropical tourism, distinctive Ryukyuan cultural content, or US-Japan defense-related communications, Okinawa is the natural location.
Industry Landscape
Tourism and hospitality with the major Japanese hotel chains operating substantial Okinawan resort properties. US military operations with Kadena Air Base, Marine Corps facilities, and Navy operations (a politically sensitive topic in local politics). Agriculture with sugarcane, pineapple, mango, and other tropical crops. Traditional industries with awamori distilling, Okinawan textiles (bingata and bashofu), and pottery (yachimun). Some manufacturing including OIST (Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology) research operations.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
Central Naha around the Kokusai-dori commercial street holds traditional corporate offices and major hotels. Shuri (the historic Ryukyuan royal capital, with Shuri Castle's recent rebuilding following the 2019 fire) is iconic for cultural content. The beach resort areas at Onna village hold the major luxury resort properties. The northern Okinawa region (Yanbaru) holds nature and adventure tourism. The southern Okinawa region holds historic World War II sites including the Himeyuri Memorial.
Crew Base
Okinawa has a small but capable production crew base built around the local commercial production industry and tourism work. For larger productions, crews are sometimes augmented from Tokyo or Fukuoka.
Climate
Subtropical. Hot humid summers and mild winters (Okinawa rarely experiences cold weather; the climate resembles Hawaii). Typhoon season runs June through October with significant disruption potential. Best outdoor shooting weather March through May, late October through December.
Production Logistics in Okinawa
Reference for projects in southern Japan.
Time Zone
Japan Standard Time (JST, UTC+9). No daylight saving.
Language
Japanese is the official language. English is encountered in tourism and US military-affiliated contexts. Traditional Okinawan (Ryukyuan) languages are also spoken in some cultural contexts.
Currency
Japanese Yen (JPY). USD is encountered around US military installations but JPY is the everyday business currency.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
100V at 60Hz (the western Japan standard, distinct from eastern Japan's 50Hz). Type A and B plugs (US standard). Default 29.97fps NTSC or 23.976fps for cinematic work given the 60Hz electrical frequency, matching the Japanese national standard.
Airport
Naha Airport (OKA) handles direct flights to major Japanese cities, Taipei, Seoul, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and other Asian destinations. About 15 minutes from central Naha by monorail.
Typhoon Season
Typhoon season runs June through October with significant production disruption potential. Schedule outside peak risk windows when possible. We monitor JMA forecasts and adjust schedules accordingly.
US Military Base Access
For US military facility access (Kadena, Camp Foster, MCAS Futenma), advance US Department of Defense clearance is required. Lead times of 8 to 12 weeks are typical.
Permits
Okinawa Prefecture and local municipalities handle filming permits. Lead times of 2 to 4 weeks are typical. For Shuri Castle and heritage sites, additional cultural heritage permissions apply.
