Rotterdam for Corporate Video: Europe's Largest Port and Maritime Capital
Rotterdam is my home market. The city is the largest port in Europe, the second-largest Dutch city after Amsterdam, and one of the most important corporate production markets for shipping, logistics, energy, and the broader maritime industry globally. The Port of Rotterdam handles over 440 million tonnes of cargo annually, making it Europe's largest seaport by tonnage and one of the world's most strategically important. Maersk, MSC, COSCO, Hapag-Lloyd, and the major global shipping lines all operate major Rotterdam terminals. Unilever maintained dual Dutch and UK headquarters in Rotterdam until 2020 (now fully UK-domiciled but with major continuing operations). Shell maintains substantial Rotterdam refining and petrochemical operations. Vopak (the world's leading independent tank storage company), Boskalis (global dredging and marine services), and STC Group (maritime education) anchor a deep Rotterdam maritime corporate cluster. Erasmus University Rotterdam and Rotterdam School of Management (RSM, one of Europe's top business schools) drive substantial research and corporate education activity. Rotterdam's modern architecture (the city was largely rebuilt after WWII bombing destroyed the historic center) is iconic for brand B-roll: the Erasmus Bridge, the Markthal, Wilhelminapier, and the De Rotterdam complex are recognizable global landmarks.
The Port and Maritime Anchor
The Port of Rotterdam generates a continuous corporate communications calendar around global trade, logistics, energy transition (hydrogen, carbon capture, electrification), and the broader maritime industry. Container terminal operations, refinery and petrochemical facilities, offshore wind project staging, and the major shipping line operations all commission corporate content throughout the year. Energy transition is a particularly active theme: Rotterdam is positioning itself as a global hydrogen hub and major decarbonization gateway for European industry.
Industry Landscape
Shipping and logistics with the major global shipping lines, terminal operators, and supply chain firms operating Rotterdam terminals. Energy and petrochemicals with Shell, BP, ExxonMobil, and other major operators with Rotterdam refining and storage. Maritime services with Vopak (tank storage), Boskalis (dredging and marine services), Royal IHC (shipbuilding and dredging equipment), and the broader maritime services cluster. Consumer goods with the historic Unilever presence and other major Dutch consumer brands. Education and research with Erasmus University and RSM. Architecture and engineering with major Rotterdam-based firms (OMA, MVRDV, Mecanoo, and others).
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
The Wilhelminapier and Kop van Zuid (the modern waterfront district holding the Erasmus Bridge, De Rotterdam complex, Hotel New York, and many corporate towers) hold the iconic Rotterdam architecture and major corporate facilities. The central Rotterdam business district around Coolsingel and Beurs holds traditional corporate offices and major hotels. The Maasvlakte and Europoort (the major port and petrochemical complexes west of the city) hold the operational port and refining facilities. The Erasmus University and Erasmus MC campus holds research operations.
Crew Base
Rotterdam has a deep production crew base built around the substantial maritime industry, the corporate communications demand, and the city's role as a Dutch design and architecture hub. Camera, sound, lighting, post-production, and broadcast crews are all available at international standard. The Rotterdam film and broadcasting industry has had significant international recognition.
Climate
Maritime temperate. Mild winters and warm summers. Best outdoor shooting weather April through October. Coastal influence brings reliable but changeable weather.
Production Logistics in Rotterdam
Reference for projects in Europe's largest port.
Time Zone
Central European Time (CET, UTC+1) winter, Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2) summer.
Language
Dutch is the official language. English is universally used in maritime, corporate, and international business contexts. The Netherlands ranks at the top of global English proficiency rankings.
Currency
Euro (EUR). The Netherlands is in the EU and the Eurozone.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
230V at 50Hz. Type C and F plugs (European standard). Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work.
Airport
Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM) handles direct flights to many European business cities. About 15 to 20 minutes from central Rotterdam. Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is about 45 minutes by direct train and handles a wider range of intercontinental flights including direct services to most major Asian, North American, and Middle Eastern hubs.
Port Access
For Port of Rotterdam facility access (container terminals, refineries, petrochemical sites, or offshore staging), advance security clearance, NDA execution, safety protocols (PPE, escort, safety briefing), and operational coordination apply. Lead times of 4 to 8 weeks are typical depending on the facility and content sensitivity.
Permits
Rotterdam municipality handles filming permits. Lead times of 1 to 2 weeks are typical for standard corporate work. For Erasmus Bridge, Markthal, or other landmark area shoots, additional considerations apply.
Maritime Coordination
For shoots requiring vessel access, harbour cruising, or offshore staging, coordination with the Port of Rotterdam Authority and the relevant operating companies is essential. The Pilotage Services Rotterdam-Rijnmond manages major shipping movements.
Customs and Equipment
The Netherlands is in the EU customs union. Equipment movements within the EU follow EU single-market provisions.
