San Diego for Corporate Video: Biotech, Defense, and Mild Weather

When I shoot in San Diego, two industries shape most of the work: biotech and defense. Torrey Pines and Sorrento Mesa hold the biotech corridor anchored by Illumina and Qualcomm. The Navy and Marine Corps base presence drives defense and aerospace corporate work. For a city this size, San Diego has unusually deep production infrastructure in both sectors.

Biotech and Life Sciences

The Torrey Pines mesa, north of central San Diego, holds one of the densest biotech clusters in the United States. Illumina, Acadia, Genomic Health, and many smaller firms operate here. For pharma webinars, medical device launches, KOL interviews, and corporate investor communications in life sciences, San Diego is a primary US destination.

Defense and Aerospace

The US Navy has its largest concentration of personnel in San Diego, along with Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. For corporate work with defense contractors, naval communications, and aerospace clients, base access protocols apply and crew familiarity with security environments matters.

Convention and Event Venues

The San Diego Convention Center hosts Comic-Con, BIO International, and dozens of biotech and tech industry events through the year. For corporate productions, this means broadcast-grade venue infrastructure on the bayfront.

Climate

San Diego has perhaps the most reliable shooting weather in the United States: mild temperatures, low humidity, and over 260 sunny days a year. Outdoor work is easy to schedule.

Defense Facility Access

Filming at naval or Marine Corps facilities requires advance security clearance, typically 30 to 60 days. For shoots at commercial sites near the bases, no clearance is needed but local security considerations apply.

Biotech Campus Access

Major biotech campuses have their own security and visitor protocols. For shoots inside research facilities, longer advance coordination and possibly biosafety briefings apply.

Permits

City of San Diego film permits go through the Film Commission, well-established given the regular pharma, biotech, and defense corporate work. Lead times are short for standard shoots.
