Ulaanbaatar for Corporate Video: Mongolia's Mining and Steppe Capital
Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia and the operational base for nearly all corporate communications work in the country. The Mongolian economy is dominated by the mining sector: Mongolia holds some of the world's largest copper, coal, and gold reserves. Oyu Tolgoi (the major copper and gold mine operated by Rio Tinto in the South Gobi) and Erdenet (the major copper mine in northern Mongolia) anchor the country's industrial economy. The Mongolian Mining Corporation, Energy Resources, and various international mining firms maintain Ulaanbaatar corporate offices. Khan Bank, Golomt Bank, Trade and Development Bank of Mongolia, and the major Mongolian banks anchor financial services. For corporate productions involving Mongolian mining, the broader Mongolian corporate sector, or pan-Asian content seeking dramatic steppe and Gobi backdrops, Ulaanbaatar is the natural location.
The Mining Anchor
Mining generates substantial corporate communications demand. Oyu Tolgoi (operated by Rio Tinto and Turquoise Hill Resources) is one of the world's largest copper and gold mines. The mine's environmental, social, and governance content generates ongoing institutional production work. Erdenet (one of the largest copper mines globally) similarly anchors substantial corporate communications. The broader Mongolian mining industry generates investor communications, community relations content, and ESG reporting.
Industry Landscape
Mining dominates the modern industrial economy. Banking with the major Mongolian banks. Cashmere production with Gobi Corporation, Mongol Cashmere, and the broader cashmere industry (Mongolia produces approximately 40% of global cashmere). Tourism with eco-tourism, Gobi Desert expeditions, and cultural tourism. Telecommunications with Mobicom, Unitel, and the major operators. Agriculture and livestock with the traditional nomadic herding economy.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
Central Ulaanbaatar around Sukhbaatar Square holds Parliament, government ministries, and major hotels. The Khan-Uul district holds modern corporate offices and the diplomatic enclave. The Tuv aimag (provincial countryside immediately surrounding Ulaanbaatar) holds the Hustai National Park and offers traditional steppe backdrops accessible within a day. The South Gobi mining region holds Oyu Tolgoi operations (about 90 minutes by air from Ulaanbaatar).
Crew Base
Ulaanbaatar has a small but capable production crew base built around the local commercial production and limited international media coverage. For larger productions, crews are sometimes augmented from Beijing or Seoul.
Climate
Continental with extreme variation. Ulaanbaatar is the coldest capital city in the world by average annual temperature. Winters are extremely cold (regularly below minus 25C from December through February). Summers are warm and brief. Best outdoor shooting weather June through September.
Production Logistics in Ulaanbaatar
Reference for projects in Mongolia.
Time Zone
Ulaanbaatar Time (ULAT, UTC+8). No daylight saving as of 2017.
Language
Mongolian (Khalkha) is the official language, written in Cyrillic script. English is increasingly used in international corporate, mining, and banking contexts, particularly among younger professionals. Russian is also encountered.
Currency
Mongolian Togrog (MNT). Most international B2B production work is invoiced in USD given currency volatility.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
220V at 50Hz. Type C and E plugs (European standard). Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work.
Airport
Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN, the new airport opened 2021, replacing the older Buyant-Ukhaa) handles direct flights to major Asian, Russian, and limited European business cities. About 45 to 60 minutes from central Ulaanbaatar.
Mining Site Access
For Oyu Tolgoi, Erdenet, or other mining facility access, advance security clearance, NDA execution, safety protocols, and operational coordination apply. Lead times of 6 to 12 weeks are typical. Helicopter access is sometimes required for remote sites.
Winter Considerations
From November through March, Ulaanbaatar experiences extreme cold. Equipment requires winter-rated batteries and cold-weather protection. Outdoor shoots require thermal crew clothing. Steppe and Gobi access can be limited by snow.
Permits
The Mongolian Film Council and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs handle filming permits. Lead times of 4 to 8 weeks are typical for standard work, longer for restricted regions.
