Vientiane for Corporate Video: Laos' Modest Capital
Vientiane is the capital of Laos and the operational base for nearly all corporate communications work in the country. Laos is a small landlocked Southeast Asian country whose economy is built around hydroelectric power generation (the country exports substantial electricity to neighboring Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia), mining, agriculture, and a growing tourism sector. EDL (Electricite du Laos), BCEL (Banque pour le Commerce Exterieur Lao), Lao Development Bank, and the major foreign-affiliated banks anchor financial services. The China-Laos Railway (opened 2021) connects Vientiane to Kunming in southern China and has significantly increased Lao trade activity. For corporate productions involving Lao business, the Mekong region, or hydroelectric and mining industry communications, Vientiane is the natural location.
Industry Landscape
Hydroelectric power with EDL and the substantial Lao dam network exporting electricity regionally. Mining with copper, gold, and potash operations across the country. Banking with the major Lao banks and Thai-affiliated regional bank operations. Agriculture with coffee, rice, and timber production. Tourism with the historic temples, French colonial architecture, and the Mekong River. Manufacturing including textiles, garments, and the growing Special Economic Zone activities along the China-Laos Railway corridor.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
Central Vientiane around Lane Xang Avenue holds government, traditional corporate offices, and major hotels. The Patuxay area holds the iconic war memorial arch. The Mekong waterfront is iconic for brand B-roll. The That Luang complex holds the iconic gold-covered stupa.
Crew Base
Vientiane has a very small production crew base. For larger productions, crews are typically augmented from Bangkok (about a 60 minute flight or 12 hours by road) or Hanoi.
Climate
Tropical. Hot year-round with monsoon influence. Dry season November through April (best outdoor shooting weather), wet season May through October.
Production Logistics in Vientiane
Reference for projects in Laos.
Time Zone
Indochina Time (ICT, UTC+7). No daylight saving.
Language
Lao is the official language. English is encountered in international corporate, tourism, and donor contexts. French is also encountered given the colonial heritage. Thai is widely understood.
Currency
Lao Kip (LAK). USD and Thai Baht are widely accepted in business. Most international B2B production work is invoiced in USD.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
230V at 50Hz. Type A, B, C, E, and F plugs are all encountered. Bring versatile adapters. Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work.
Airport
Wattay International Airport (VTE) handles direct flights to Bangkok, Hanoi, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, and limited other destinations. About 10 to 15 minutes from central Vientiane. The China-Laos Railway also provides connections to Kunming and Bangkok.
Permits
The Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism handles filming permits. Lead times of 4 to 6 weeks are typical for sensitive content.
Customs and Equipment
ATA Carnets are accepted but customs procedures can be detailed. Allow extra time for equipment processing.
