Cairo for Corporate Video: Egypt's Capital and North African Hub
I default to Cairo for any major Egyptian or North African corporate brief. Cairo is the capital of Egypt and the largest urban area in Africa and the Arab world. The greater Cairo metropolitan area (including Giza and the surrounding governorates) holds about 22 million people. The city anchors the Egyptian Exchange (EGX, one of the oldest stock exchanges in Africa and the Middle East), the Central Bank of Egypt, and the major Egyptian corporate headquarters including Commercial International Bank Egypt (CIB, the largest private bank in Egypt), the National Bank of Egypt, Banque Misr, Telecom Egypt, Orascom Construction, Elsewedy Electric (one of MENA's major electrical industry firms), Eastern Company (the historic Egyptian tobacco firm), and substantial Egyptian industrial operations. Cairo is the major Middle Eastern and North African media center, with the major Egyptian film and television industry (the historic backbone of Arab-world entertainment), MBC's substantial regional operations, and the major Egyptian broadcast industry. The New Administrative Capital is under active development about 45 km east of Cairo, intended to host the government and major corporate operations. For corporate productions involving Egyptian business, North African or Arab-world regional work, Suez Canal-affiliated content, or distinctive Egyptian heritage and pyramid B-roll, Cairo is the natural location.
The Egyptian Media Industry Anchor
Cairo has historically been the cultural and entertainment capital of the Arab world, with the major Egyptian film industry (sometimes called Hollywood of the East, anchored by Studio Misr heritage) and substantial television production. The substantial Egyptian commercial production industry generates substantial corporate communications work across MENA. Layer on top the substantial broadcast industry (Egyptian state TV, plus the major satellite broadcasters with substantial Egyptian operations), and Cairo holds disproportionate weight in Arab-world media and entertainment industry corporate communications.
Industry Landscape
Banking with the major Egyptian banks (CIB, NBE, Banque Misr) and EGX. Telecommunications with Telecom Egypt, Vodafone Egypt, Etisalat Misr, plus the Orange Egypt operations. Construction and engineering with Orascom Construction and substantial regional operations. Industrial with Elsewedy Electric, Eastern Company, plus substantial Egyptian industrial cluster. Media and entertainment with the major Egyptian film and TV industry. Tourism with the substantial Pyramid, Egyptian Museum, and broader Egyptian tourism. Real estate with substantial New Administrative Capital and 6th of October City developments. Oil and gas with the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation operations.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
Downtown Cairo around Tahrir Square holds traditional corporate offices and the iconic Egyptian Museum. Zamalek (the upscale Nile island district) holds traditional luxury hospitality and major hotels. Maadi (the southern Cairo expat district) holds substantial corporate offices including multinational regional headquarters. Heliopolis (the historic eastern district) holds substantial commercial activity. New Cairo and the 5th Settlement area (east of central Cairo) hold modern corporate developments. The New Administrative Capital (about 45 km east) holds the developing government and corporate district. Giza holds the iconic pyramids and Sphinx for distinctive Egyptian brand B-roll.
Crew Base
Cairo has the deepest production crew base in Africa and the Arab world, built around the major Egyptian film and TV industry (the largest film industry in the Arab world), the substantial broadcast industry, the substantial commercial production industry, and frequent international shoots. Camera, sound, lighting, post-production, broadcast, and specialty crews are available at international standard.
Climate
Hot desert. Hot dry summers (often above 40C in July and August) and mild winters. Best outdoor shooting weather October through April. Khamaseen sandstorms can occur March through May.
Production Logistics in Cairo
Reference for projects in Egypt.
Time Zone
Eastern European Time (EET, UTC+2). Egypt reintroduced daylight saving in 2023 (EEST, UTC+3) summer; confirm current rules when planning.
Language
Arabic (Egyptian Arabic dialect) is the official language. English is widely used in international corporate, banking, and multinational regional headquarters contexts. French is encountered in some traditional business and luxury contexts.
Currency
Egyptian Pound (EGP). The Egyptian Pound has experienced substantial devaluation in recent years. Most international B2B production work is invoiced in USD given EGP volatility.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
220V at 50Hz. Type C and F plugs (European standard). Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work.
Airport
Cairo International Airport (CAI) handles direct flights to most major Middle Eastern, European, Asian, North American, and African business cities. About 45 to 75 minutes from central Cairo depending on traffic. Cairo traffic is famously difficult.
Heritage and Government Permits
For pyramid, Sphinx, Egyptian Museum, or other major Egyptian antiquities access, advance permissions through the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities are essential. Lead times of 4 to 8 weeks are typical. Drone operations near heritage sites are particularly restricted. Government and state-affiliated facility access requires State Information Service (SIS) accreditation.
Permits
The Egyptian Film Commission and the Cairo Governorate handle filming permits. Lead times of 3 to 6 weeks are typical for standard corporate work.
