Doha for Corporate Video: Qatar's LNG Capital and Emerging Tech Host
I work in Doha increasingly often because Qatar has become one of the world's most active corporate production markets relative to its size. Doha holds Qatar Energy (the world's largest LNG exporter), the Qatar Investment Authority (one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds with major holdings in Volkswagen, Glencore, Sainsbury's, Heathrow, and many other global assets), beIN Media Group, Al Jazeera, Qatar Airways, and a substantial financial services cluster in the Qatar Financial Centre (QFC). Layer on top the 2022 FIFA World Cup legacy infrastructure, the Web Summit Qatar (which launched in 2024 and quickly became a major tech event), and the rapid growth of the Qatari corporate and cultural sectors, and Doha ranks as one of the most important corporate production markets in the Gulf.
Industry Landscape
Energy anchored by Qatar Energy and the broader LNG sector is the dominant industry. Sovereign wealth and finance with QIA, Qatar National Bank (the largest bank in the Middle East and Africa by assets), and the QFC. Media with Al Jazeera (one of the world's most-watched news broadcasters) and beIN Media Group. Aviation with Qatar Airways. Construction and infrastructure built around continuing post-World Cup development.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
West Bay and the Doha Corniche hold modern corporate towers, the QFC, and most major hotels. Lusail (the new city developed for the World Cup, just north of central Doha) holds modern corporate and entertainment venues including Lusail Stadium. Education City holds the international university branch campuses and major research institutions. Msheireb Downtown Doha is the redeveloped traditional center.
Major Corporate Events
Doha hosts a substantial event calendar including the Doha Forum (the major Qatar policy event), Web Summit Qatar, the Qatar International Boat Show, and various industry trade fairs. The World Cup legacy infrastructure (stadiums, hotels, transport) supports continuing major event hosting.
Crew Base
Doha's production crew base has grown substantially since the World Cup. Camera, sound, lighting, post-production, and broadcast crews are available at international standard. For major productions, international crew often combines with local Qatari crew for cultural fluency and government coordination.
Climate
Hot desert. Extreme summer heat with temperatures regularly above 45C in July and August (Doha is sometimes Earth's hottest inhabited city in summer). Mild winters. Best outdoor shooting weather November through March.
Production Logistics in Doha
Reference for projects in Qatar.
Time Zone
Arabia Standard Time (AST, UTC+3). No daylight saving.
Language
Arabic is the official language. English is widely used in international corporate and government contexts. Qatar has one of the highest English-speaking populations in the Gulf region given the expatriate workforce.
Currency
Qatari Riyal (QAR), pegged to the US Dollar at 3.64 QAR per USD. Most international B2B production work is invoiced in QAR or USD.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
240V at 50Hz. Type D and G plugs are most common (UK-style three-pin). Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work given the 50Hz electrical frequency.
Airport
Hamad International Airport (DOH) handles direct flights to most major business cities globally. Qatar Airways operates one of the world's largest international networks. About 15 to 25 minutes from central Doha.
Filming Permits
The Doha Film Institute and the Ministry of Culture handle filming permits and coordination. Lead times of 2 to 4 weeks are typical depending on the content and location. For government facilities or sensitive sites, longer lead times apply.
Cultural Considerations
Qatari cultural norms apply. Friday-Saturday is the local weekend (though many international firms operate Monday-Friday for global business). Modest dress applies for filming in many locations. During Ramadan, production schedules adjust to accommodate fasting hours.
Customs and Equipment
ATA Carnets are accepted. Qatar customs procedures are generally efficient. Allow appropriate time for equipment processing on arrival.
