Johannesburg for Corporate Video: South Africa's Financial Capital
I shoot in Johannesburg regularly because the city is the financial and corporate capital of sub-Saharan Africa. Johannesburg holds the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE, the largest stock exchange on the African continent), the headquarters of Anglo American, Standard Bank, FirstRand (FNB), Sasol, MTN, Naspers, Discovery, and dozens of other major South African and pan-African multinationals. For corporate productions involving sub-Saharan African business, South African mining, financial services, or telecommunications, Johannesburg is the natural operational base.
Industry Landscape
Financial services dominated by the major banks (Standard Bank, FirstRand, Absa, Nedbank) and the JSE. Mining is the historical anchor and remains significant with Anglo American, Gold Fields, AngloGold Ashanti, and others. Telecommunications anchored by MTN (the major pan-African mobile operator) and Vodacom. Energy and chemicals built around Sasol's substantial Johannesburg operations. Media and entertainment with Naspers (the global tech investment company that originated as a South African newspaper publisher) and MultiChoice.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
Sandton holds the modern corporate towers and the JSE (Sandton overtook the Johannesburg CBD as the financial heart in the 1990s and 2000s). Rosebank holds tech and creative firms and the Rosebank Mall corporate district. Melrose Arch is another modern corporate cluster. The Johannesburg CBD holds traditional corporate offices and the historic financial buildings.
Crew Base
Johannesburg has the deepest production crew base on the African continent, built around the financial services demand, the substantial South African commercial production industry, and the broader pan-African corporate market. Camera, sound, lighting, post-production, and broadcast crews are all available at international standard.
Climate
Subtropical highland at high altitude (about 1,750 meters elevation). Warm sunny days and cool nights year-round. Distinct summer (October to March, wet, thunderstorm season) and winter (April to September, dry, cool). Best outdoor shooting weather April through September.
Safety Considerations
Johannesburg has higher crime levels than most international corporate production markets. We brief crews on neighborhood safety, schedule shoots in secure corporate environments, and coordinate with venue security. The reality is more nuanced than international media coverage suggests, but reasonable precautions apply.
Production Logistics in Johannesburg
Reference for projects in South Africa.
Time Zone
South Africa Standard Time (SAST, UTC+2). No daylight saving.
Language
South Africa has 11 official languages. English is the working language for business, finance, and international corporate productions. Afrikaans, Zulu, and Xhosa are widely encountered.
Currency
South African Rand (ZAR). Most international B2B production work is invoiced in USD or ZAR.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
230V at 50Hz. Type M (the large 3-pin South African plug, distinctive to South Africa) is standard; Type N and Type D also encountered. Bring South African-specific adapters or local solutions. Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work.
Airport
O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) is sub-Saharan Africa's largest aviation hub, with direct flights to most major business cities globally. About 30 to 45 minutes from Sandton depending on traffic. Lanseria Airport handles some regional and private flights.
Corporate Facility Access
For JSE, major bank, mining company, or other corporate facility access, advance security clearance, NDA execution, and internal communications coordination are essential. Lead times of 2 to 4 weeks are typical.
Load Shedding
South Africa has experienced periodic electricity supply issues (load shedding) over recent years. Major corporate offices and hotels have backup power systems but production planning should account for possible schedule adjustments. The situation has improved significantly in 2024-2026.
Permits
Johannesburg municipality and the Gauteng Film Commission handle filming permits. Lead times of 1 to 3 weeks are typical for standard corporate work.
