Manila for Corporate Video: BPO Capital of the World
I work in Manila constantly because the Philippines is the world's largest BPO and shared services market, and Manila anchors that industry. The Philippines BPO industry employs over a million people across the country and contributes nearly 8% of national GDP, with Manila as the operational core. Major operators include Accenture (with one of its largest global delivery networks in Manila), Concentrix, Teleperformance, Convergys (now Concentrix), Sykes (now Sitel), and the operations of nearly every major multinational targeting English-speaking global support. Layer on top the Philippine financial services sector (BDO Unibank, BPI, Metrobank, Security Bank), the SM Group and Ayala (the two largest Philippine conglomerates), PLDT and Globe Telecom, and Manila ranks among Asia's most important corporate production markets for BPO, financial services, and conglomerate work.
The BPO Anchor
Manila's BPO industry drives a continuous corporate communications calendar. Operations launches, employee engagement content, client communications, training videos, executive interviews, and HR communications all commission throughout the year. The BPO operations are concentrated in specific districts (Makati, Bonifacio Global City, Ortigas, and increasingly Quezon City) that have built corporate infrastructure around the industry's needs.
Industry Landscape
BPO and shared services dominate the modern services sector. Banking and financial services with BDO Unibank (one of the largest banks in Southeast Asia), BPI, Metrobank, Security Bank, and others. Conglomerates with the SM Group (retail, real estate, banking) and Ayala (real estate, banking, telecommunications, water, energy). Telecommunications with PLDT and Globe Telecom. Energy with Aboitiz Power and Manila Electric Company (Meralco). Real estate developers across multiple major conglomerates.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
Makati City (the historic CBD) holds the Ayala headquarters, traditional banking, and major luxury hotels. Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig holds modern corporate towers, multinational regional offices, and the BPO industry's most modern facilities. Ortigas holds traditional financial services and SM Group operations. The Mall of Asia complex in Pasay holds major event venues. Manila proper holds historic government and traditional commerce.
Crew Base
Manila has one of Asia's deepest production crew bases, built around the substantial Philippine film industry, the major broadcasters, and the BPO and corporate communications demand. Camera, sound, lighting, grip, post-production, and broadcast crews are all available at international standard.
Climate
Tropical. Hot and humid year-round. Wet season (June through November) brings significant rainfall and typhoon risk. Best outdoor shooting weather December through May.
Production Logistics in Manila
Reference for projects in the Philippines.
Time Zone
Philippine Standard Time (PST, UTC+8). No daylight saving.
Language
Filipino (Tagalog-based) and English are both official languages. English is widely used in business, BPO, financial services, and international corporate contexts. The English language proficiency of the Philippine workforce is a key driver of the BPO industry.
Currency
Philippine Peso (PHP). Most international B2B production work is invoiced in USD or PHP.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
220V at 60Hz (an unusual combination). Type A, B, and C plugs are all encountered, sometimes within the same building. Bring versatile adapters. Default 29.97fps NTSC or 23.976fps for cinematic work given the 60Hz electrical frequency.
Airport
Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) is the primary gateway, with direct flights to most major Asian, Middle Eastern, and US business cities. About 30 to 60 minutes from Makati or BGC depending on traffic.
Traffic Considerations
Metro Manila traffic is famously heavy. Cross-Metro moves between Makati, BGC, and Ortigas can take 30 to 90 minutes during rush hours, sometimes longer. Plan production schedules accordingly. Off-peak windows (early morning, late evening) are significantly faster.
Typhoon Season
The Philippines experiences typhoons primarily from June through November. Major productions schedule outside peak typhoon risk periods when possible. We monitor PAGASA forecasts and adjust schedules accordingly.
Permits
The Film Development Council of the Philippines and local government units (Makati, Taguig, Pasig, Manila) handle filming permits. Lead times of 1 to 3 weeks are typical for standard corporate work.
