Geneva for Corporate Video: Diplomatic Capital and Private Banking Hub
I shoot in Geneva more than any other Swiss city outside of Basel, and the reason comes down to one thing: density of international organizations and private banks per square kilometer. Geneva holds the European headquarters of the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the World Health Organization, CERN, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and dozens of other major international organizations. Layer on top the private banking sector (Pictet, Lombard Odier, UBP, Edmond de Rothschild, Mirabaud, all headquartered or with major presence here) and the commodities trading firms along the lake, and Geneva ranks among the most important corporate production markets in Europe for institutional and wealth management work.
Industry Landscape
Private banking and wealth management is the dominant local sector, with the Geneva tradition of discretion and high-net-worth client service generating substantial corporate communications work. International organizations (UN agencies in particular) drive a steady volume of institutional video. Commodities trading firms (Trafigura, Mercuria, Vitol, Gunvor all maintain significant Geneva operations) generate sector-specific corporate work. Pharma has a Geneva-area presence with Firmenich (now part of dsm-firmenich) and various biotech firms.
Where Corporate Shoots Happen
The Quai du Mont-Blanc and the Rue du Rhône hold the private banks and high-end wealth management firms. The Place des Nations area holds the UN and major international organizations. Cologny and the surrounding lake shore hold family offices and ultra-high-net-worth clients. The Plainpalais and Eaux-Vives areas hold smaller corporate offices and creative firms.
Crew Base
Geneva has a strong production crew base built around international organization media work and private banking communications. The city draws specialized crew from across French-speaking Switzerland, Lausanne (40 minutes by train), and the broader Swiss production market.
Climate
Temperate, with significant lake effect. Warm summers, cool winters with occasional fog. Best outdoor shooting weather May through September.
Production Logistics in Geneva
Reference for projects in French-speaking Switzerland.
Time Zone
Central European Time (CET, UTC+1) winter, Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2) summer.
Language
French is the official local language. English is the working language for international organizations, private banking client-facing work, and most international corporate productions. German and Italian are encountered in inter-Swiss business contexts.
Currency
Swiss Franc (CHF). Most international B2B production work is invoiced in CHF, EUR, or USD.
Electrical Standards, Frame Rate
230V at 50Hz. Type J plugs (Swiss-specific, three-pin grounded). Standard European Type C plugs work. Default 25fps PAL or 23.976fps for commercial work.
Airport
Geneva Airport (GVA) handles direct flights to most major business cities globally. About 10 minutes from central Geneva, one of the most centrally located airports of any European city.
UN and International Organization Access
For shoots inside the UN Palais des Nations, WHO, WTO, or other international organizations, advance media accreditation and security clearance are essential. Lead times of 2 to 6 weeks are typical depending on the organization and content sensitivity.
Permits
Geneva canton handles filming permits. Lead times of 1 to 2 weeks are typical for standard corporate work. For lakefront filming, additional municipal coordination may apply.
Customs and Equipment
Switzerland is not in the EU customs union. ATA Carnets are essential for professional equipment.
